• MORE ON TWINS http://video.couriermail.com.au/2201371960/Twinnies
Paula and Bridgette Powers

For a time Helen Powers tried separating her girls, Paula and Bridgette, into their own bedrooms. But each morning
she'd find them curled up together in the hallway, huddled against the bitter chill of a Southern Highlands (NSW) morning. She gave up years ago - their magnetism defies intervention. Paula and Bridgette dress and accessorize identically, style their hair the same, share a bedroom, like the same food, have a passion for wildlife, laugh the same and talk the same. Moreover, they talk at the same time, forming a single voice, often
finishing each other's sentences. (See our video at uonsunday.com.au)
No gimmick, says mum. They've done it since they were babies. In a study of more than 420 twins at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, "twinnies", as they like to be called, were considered the most identical pair in the cohort. Even their mum defers to the "twinnies" tag. "I just call 'em 'twinnie' because I really can't be bothered having to check," Helen explains. As they go about their work at their Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue operation near Beewah on the Sunshine Coast, they're rarely more than a few metres apart. The longest they've had to endure being apart was three days, when Paula had her appendix out, aged 16. One day, when doctors noticed a bizarre spike in her blood pressure, their mum put it do Bridgette not visiting her sister that day, as she had a lot of home work. As .they later found out, a group of young men in a car had tried to abduct Bridgett on a main road 7km from the hospital at that very moment. Then only three weeks later, Bridgette
had to have her appendix removed.. '.'The doctors thought I was faking it,
doing It in sympathy, but actually my appendix nearly burst," she says. The pair have always dressed identically buying their own clothes to ensure they get the same piece. Helen one day made the mistake of shopping for them, buying jeans- same brand, size and style. "When I brought them home, the twinnies looked them over and pointed out
that one tiny button was different. They wouldn't wear them." And when they have tried to dress differently, it just didn't feel right. ''We feel undressed or something," they say.Paula and Bridgette don't have boyfriends - never have. It'd be too complicated, too hard to be apart. "So we just give our love to the wildlife," they say in concert. f While the pair revel in the closeness 0 their relationship, they're aware of the perils of such a dependent bond. That is, how they would cope if one were to die. They have talked about it. "We've decided we'd have to carry a mirror in our pockets or handbags or something, so we could look~ at our selves when we missed the other. Sunday mail 18 Mar 2012
